My Favourite Travel Photo was founded by Karl Barratt and Lisa de Kleyn in 2005. Karl and Lisa visited Bangladesh during an RMIT International Community Development study tour in 2004 and stayed with Co-Operation in Development (CO-ID), a registered Australian charity that builds schools and provides a free education to children. They witnessed the important role CO-ID played in southern Bangladesh and wanted to assist the organisation when they returned to Australia.

Thanks to its supporters, My Favourite Travel Photo is now funding an entire school in Bangladesh. Char Nalua is located on the south-east corner of Bhola Island in southern Bangladesh. Opened in 2003, the school is run by four teachers providing a free education to over 330 students.

It is a state government requirement that all fundraisers that raise over $10 000 within 12 months must register with the Department of Justice, Consumer Affairs Victoria. In 2006, the event raised over $10 000 and was registered on 21 August 2006, number 6791.
